[HIGH FIVE] We gave a High Five to Maddie Watkins, Founder of 202strong and Strongline in Rockville, MD.

WellcommDC: Where do you work…out?

Maddie Watkins: 202strong, and, when I teach online classes, Strongline.

WDC: What does wellness mean to you?

MW: Wellness means taking care of my body and my mind and setting myself up for success in the future. My time in the gym is just as important as the time I dedicate to fueling myself properly, getting enough sleep, taking time to relax and have fun, and being surrounded by good people. I want to be strong, mobile, and be able to do pull-ups, run, surf, swim, hike, and feel healthy throughout the rest of my life.

WDC: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?

MW: Over the next 12 months, my goal is to make sure I prioritize my own fitness by continuing to lift weights, build back up to running ten miles again, and get better at surfing! I am lucky to get to lead fitness retreats with Nya Retreats that allow me to travel and try new things like surfing!

WDC: Who are some people who inspire you, motivate you, or keep you accountable when it comes to your wellness?

MW: All of my personal training clients really inspire me because they work so hard every session, and many of them are in their 60s, 70s, and 80s, lifting heavy weights, keeping up with their grandchildren, and getting stronger each year and each decade. I want to be like them when I grow up! Also, without Jesse Lewis at District Performance & Physio keeping my aches and pains at bay and teaching me about what’s going on with me specifically, I wouldn't be able to do all of the things I love pain-free.

WDC: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?

MW: There are so many facets of wellness and fitness, so I would say choose the most important one for you (I always say strength) and build that habit first. When that is solid in your routine, start to work on the next piece. Lifting weights has been a habit and a love of mine for over fiften years, but only recently did I start paying more detailed attention to the ingredients in our food and cooking more, and now I love to cook my meals at home!
