[HIGH FIVE] We gave Daniel Shephard, an Instructor and Private Climbing Coach at Bouldering Project DC in Washington, DC.

WellcommDC: Where do you work…out?

Daniel Shephard: Bouldering Project DC.

WDC: What does wellness mean to you?

DS: Giving your body and mind the best quality of care you can through nourishment, enrichment, and rest through the food you eat, the exercise you give yourself, and sufficient recovery time and care.

WDC: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?

DS: My only goal is to make progress each day at being better than I was yesterday. As long as I continue doing this, I know that in twelve months, I'll be more capable than I am today.

WDC: Who are some people who inspire you, motivate you, or keep you accountable when it comes to your wellness?

DS: The fun of play inspires me. I love playing sports and games. Sports like climbing offer new and gradual challenges constantly, and the better you get, the more you can challenge yourself! I'm also inspired by all my fellow coaches at Bouldering Project DC like Katie Allen, Tamar Lambert, Danny Quinteros, Ben Burch, and Ryan Rhoades. Climbing and working out with people stronger than me is when I learn and grow the most!

WDC: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?

DS: Make it fun! Whatever your goal is, work on getting a little closer every day, starting today, in the most consistent way you can. This may not always be the fastest way, but consistency is much more important. For me, that means making it fun. I rarely lift, but I climb, bike, skateboard, play soccer/volleyball/basketball/tennis/pickleball, bowl, and try new activities all the time. And those activities help keep my body and mind active and well!
