[High Five] We gave a High Five to Emily Pittman, a Lagree Instructor at Urban Lagree and Founder of in·well, her functional health practice, in Austin, TX.
Wellcomm: Where do you work out?
Emily Pittman: Lagree is definitely my favorite way to move! I’ve been teaching at Urban Lagree for a few years now, and I still love taking classes just as much as I love teaching them. Outside of Lagree, I love long walks around Austin and trying different classes and studios around town to mix up my routine and keep things interesting.
WC: What does wellness mean to you?
EP: To me, wellness is feeling good in your body so you have the energy to really enjoy your life. My own health journey completely changed the way I thought about wellness and fitness and ultimately led me from a ten year career in corporate finance to becoming a fitness instructor and functional health practitioner. I’ve learned that wellness is incredibly personal: it doesn’t have to look the same for everyone, and it shouldn’t either.
WC: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?
EP: To keep getting stronger through Lagree, prioritize recovery, spend more time outside, and continue listening to what my body needs. Navigating my own autoimmune health challenges has taught me that wellness is always evolving, and sometimes supporting your body means learning when to push and when to pull back. I’m also really excited to continue growing in·well, my functional health practice, and helping more people better understand their own bodies and what they need to feel their best. My own health journey ultimately led me to this work, so getting to share what I’ve learned with others feels really full circle.
WC: Who inspires, motivates, or keeps you accountable?
EP: My fellow instructors and clients at Urban Lagree are a huge source of inspiration, particularly Katie Speidel, Julia McBride, and Maria Krychiniak. There’s something really motivating about watching people continue to show up and challenge themselves week after week. I also love a Barry’s class with Phillip Solomon. His motivational speeches always leave me feeling like I can conquer anything!
WC: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?
EP: Listen to your body, always! Start with what you actually enjoy and can see yourself doing consistently. There is so much information telling us what we “should” be doing, but health and wellness aren’t one-size-fits-all. Find movement you love, pay attention to how you feel, and get curious about what actually works for your body. And if something feels off, don’t be afraid to dig a little deeper into why.
[WellcommDC Hit Event] Saturday, October 24th: Cabeus Games
So how do we pick our Hit Events? They’re curated exclusively for our WellcommDC Community from former High Fives. Each week, we’ll highlight one standout fitness event in the WellcommDC email. This could be:
a group workout
a pop-up fitness event
a race or charity run
a pickleball tournament
a cycling ride
a recovery event or
anything else fitness-related
These events will be shared with all Wellcomm email subscribers, but submissions from former High Fives who are subscribers are prioritized, ideally for events they’re organizing, leading, or personally involved with.
We’ll feature one event per week, so spots are limited. We’re grateful for our High Fives and are excited to share these exclusive ongoing updates from the best of the DMV!
Have an event to submit? Just send us the link to the event’s Instagram Post. That’s all we need!
