[HIGH FIVE] We gave a High Five to Alissa Wilmina, a Yoga and Pilates Instructor in Washington, DC.
WellcommDC: Where do you work…out?
Alissa Wilmina: I move my body in a few different places depending on the vibe and the day: at home, in my apartment gym, outside on walks or for a run, and at Equinox and Bright Bear Yoga for classes and community. I love taking a good vinyasa or Pilates class to stay inspired!
WDC: What does wellness mean to you?
AW: Wellness means tuning into your body and mind and making conscious choices to support your energy, mood, and peace. It’s in the food you eat, the quality of your sleep, the way you speak to yourself, and the space you give yourself to pause. I believe wellness includes slowing down enough to feel what you truly need—and honoring that without guilt.
WDC: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?
AW: I’ve just started working with an amazing nutritionist, Sophie Fisher, and am committing to a high-protein diet that supports my energy and strength. I’m focusing on making small, sustainable tweaks that align with my goals. Equally important—I’m intentionally creating more space to do nothing. More unstructured time to just be, rest, and live slower. That’s wellness, too.
WDC: Who are some people who inspire you, motivate you, or keep you accountable when it comes to your wellness?
AW: Every teacher, owner, and manager at the studios I work with (Bright Bear Yoga, Alo Yoga Georgetown, Equinox, LUMA Wellness Studio, and Lūneh Yoga) inspires me to show up as my best, most present self—both on the mat and in life. Also, I’m constantly motivated by the version of myself from yesterday—always striving to improve, even by 1%, each day.
WDC: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?
AW: Just try. Start with curiosity—follow what you’re drawn to. If something doesn’t resonate, that’s okay. Pivot. Explore. Eventually, you’ll find the movement or practice that lights your fire. When that happens—commit to it. That’s where the transformation lives.
