[HIGH FIVE] We gave a High Five to Belle Chiu (@_bellarinaa), an Instructor at SweatBox.
WellcommDC: Where do you work…out?
Belle Chiu: I typically take a class at SweatBox or VIDA, work out on my own at VIDA, or go for a walk or run outside. I enjoy a variety of group fitness classes and like trying something new every once in a while. There are so many great gyms and instructors in the D.C. area, and it never hurts to change up your routine!
WDC: What does wellness mean to you?
BC: Wellness, to me, means being well-rounded and balanced in all aspects of my life. It goes beyond just physical health and fitness—it includes maintaining balance in my social interactions, relationships, mental health, and personal values. I’ve found that too much of any one thing can negatively affect other areas, so I try to stay mindful of my activities and commitments. Ultimately, the most important factor for me is whether something enhances my experience and brings me joy.
WDC: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?
BC: With everything going on lately, I have been focusing more on consistency and doing things I truly enjoy. This year, it has been especially important for me to maintain healthy habits. My primary goals are to keep a manageable routine with my workouts, eating habits, and sleep schedule. I have also become much more comfortable saying no and prioritizing activities and people that align with my values and bring me joy.
WDC: Who are some people who inspire you, motivate you, or keep you accountable when it comes to your wellness?
BC: There are so many great people in my life and in the fitness and wellness industry that it would be impossible to name them all, but here are a few who have been especially meaningful to my instructor journey: Emily Neff (@emilykneff), who is literally the reason I started teaching group fitness back in college; David McMichael (@davidinthedistrict) and Cory Brown (@corynb85), who inspired me to join the SweatBox team years ago; and last but not least, Angela Jennings (@aj_boomin) and Reggie Smith (@brooklyn_globetrotter), my mentors in building confidence and strength (throwback to Queen Bee at BOOMBOX Boxing Club — if you know, you know). I truly cannot name everyone who motivates me to be my best self, but you all know who you are, and I am so grateful!
WDC: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?
BC: Try out different activities and see what you enjoy. If something makes you feel fulfilled and empowered, consider making it part of your routine and lifestyle. As you figure out what works for you, try not to focus on what others are doing or compare yourself. Everyone is on their own journey, and the only path you can truly shape is your own.
